00:31 i was spellbound as i watched the
00:33 sheriff who had just been
00:34 shot slide back open that heavy metal
00:38 door
00:39 stagger forward a couple of steps look
00:42 deep into the camera and say
00:45 i before e except after c
00:50 contest chair fellow toastmasters i was
00:53 in the sixth grade in mrs montgomery's
00:55 class watching an educational video
00:58 where a sheriff was teaching us about
01:00 writing while a bad guy
01:02 named bad english was shooting at him
01:05 it was on a film projector because we
01:07 were technology challenged in my school
01:10 and as i watched that film all of a
01:12 sudden something started looking strange
01:15 the film slow
01:19 down and when it picked back up
01:23 it made it sound like and it looked like
01:26 it was blinking
01:27 then the sheriff was talking to us from
01:29 the side of the screen
01:30 the blinking started again with a loud
01:32 noise
01:34 everything went blank i ran to the front
01:37 and i turned off
01:38 the projector i opened it up
01:42 something smelled like it was burning
01:45 mrs montgomery i said can i try to fix
01:48 this
01:48 after school she said an hour after the
01:52 final bell rang
01:53 i had disassembled the entire projector
01:56 all over the floor
01:57 i was beginning to put it back together
01:59 when the librarian came strolling
02:01 through
02:02 what are you doing she almost screamed
02:04 at me who told you you could do this
02:07 i did said mrs montgomery the librarian
02:10 though
02:10 zeroed in on me this is school property
02:14 and it better work when you get it all
02:15 back together again if it doesn't work
02:18 your parents are gonna have to pay for
02:19 that now my parents
02:22 did not have a lot of money if i went
02:25 home and told them they had to replace a
02:27 projector at school
02:28 i would have been better off in the
02:30 hands of that bad guy bad english
02:33 and so with focused energy i started
02:36 putting the projector back together
02:39 after two hours it was whole and mrs
02:41 montgomery said
02:43 let's try it i reached up and i flipped
02:46 the on
02:46 switch and there out in front of us
02:49 projected
02:50 on to the screen and all of its glory
02:53 was
02:54 nothing nothing
02:58 the projector was dead
03:02 mrs montgomery put her arm around me and
03:04 she said
03:06 it's okay that you took the risk to try
03:08 to fix it
03:09 the victory is not in the result the
03:12 victory is in the try
03:16 but i still had to tell my parents
03:20 when i got home i snuck in and i thought
03:22 if i just
03:23 hide in my closet they'll forget i exist
03:26 but then i heard from the kitchen mike
03:28 come in
03:29 i walked in and i said mom dad
03:32 there's something i have to tell you i
03:36 love you and i
03:40 am scared of sheriffs i don't know i ran
03:43 to my room i choked i
03:44 couldn't think of anything to say i
03:46 thought i'll tell them tomorrow
03:48 i crawled on my bed and i looked up at
03:50 the ceiling and i thought
03:52 how do i get to norway
03:56 now i know there are people from norway
03:58 in the audience and can i just tell you
03:59 i don't know
04:00 why norway was my only safe haven on
04:03 this planet at that point
04:04 maybe i thought that norway had made a
04:07 deal with the u.n
04:08 that they would not let crazy librarians
04:11 come into their country
04:12 but at that night i drifted off to a
04:16 very
04:16 restless sleep dreaming of swimming
04:20 to norway i was awakened with a jolt
04:24 when my alarm went off the next morning
04:27 as i got ready for the day i was sick to
04:29 my stomach
04:30 when i got to school i knew my time was
04:33 up
04:34 i slunk to the library to find
04:38 mrs landon sitting there reading her
04:40 newspaper
04:41 she was drinking out of this coffee mug
04:46 that's concerning
04:49 i approached her and i told her the
04:52 final fate of her projector
04:55 she slowly started looking up at me her
04:58 lips started
04:59 curling then she leaned forward and said
05:03 fine what what
05:06 what just happened i i'm still alive
05:10 i could not believe it
05:13 my failure had not killed me
05:21 and yours will not kill you
05:25 what was it that mrs montgomery said
05:28 the victory is not in the result the
05:31 victory is in the try
05:34 ever since then i have walked through
05:36 life with a little librarian landon
05:38 sitting on this shoulder
05:40 and a mrs montgomery sitting on this
05:41 shoulder when i tried
05:43 and gave my very first speech which was
05:46 a train wreck
05:48 mrs landon told me you should never try
05:51 that again
05:52 but mrs montgomery reminded me that the
05:54 failure
05:55 had taught me lessons that could be a
05:56 springboard to future success
05:59 and she was right but her
06:02 words ring even more true for you
06:06 and let me tell you why i know this
06:09 for years toastmasters has been the
06:11 place where leaders are made
06:13 you are here in some way
06:16 to increase your leadership skill and
06:19 this world desperately needs
06:21 leaders who will create fertile soil for
06:23 innovation to grow
06:25 toastmasters is a great example when
06:27 covid hit this year they could have said
06:29 no we're just going to cancel the
06:30 contest we'll cancel the convention and
06:33 we'll pick it up again next year
06:34 but instead they decided to try
06:36 something new this virtual experience
06:38 and yes there have been glitches
06:41 but that's what info that's what
06:43 innovation is like
06:45 glitches happen and the lessons that
06:48 they have learned
06:49 take us miles beyond those organizations
06:53 that just canceled
06:55 if you want to lead
06:58 people to fix persistent problems
07:04 someday somewhere somebody is going to
07:07 have to try
07:08 something new and you as the leader have
07:11 the opportunity
07:12 to encourage that effort that effort
07:15 that might fail
07:18 for a chance to find the future
07:24 the victory is in the try
07:29 be a montgomery leader encourage risk
07:33 try new things the victory is not in the
07:37 result my friends
07:38 the victory is in the try
07:45 contest chair
07:56 [Applause]
